Special Education
NYOS Charter School provides special education services in accordance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). We are committed to meeting the unique learning needs of students with disabilities by offering specially designed instruction and related services in the least restrictive environment possible—ensuring all students have access to meaningful educational opportunities alongside their peers.
Special Education Department
At NYOS Charter School, our Special Education Department offers tailored services to support students with disabilities. These services may take place in general education or special education classrooms, and can include accommodations, modifications, related services, and other supports to help students thrive.
To receive special education services, a student must go through a referral and evaluation process to determine eligibility. Under IDEA, students may qualify for services if they are identified with one or more of the following disabilities and demonstrate a need for specially designed instruction:
- Auditory Impairment (AI)
- Autism (AU)
- Deaf-Blindness (DB)
- Emotional Disability (ED)
- Intellectual Disability (ID)
- Multiple Disabilities (MD)
- Orthopedic Impairment (OI)
- Other Health Impairment (OHI)
- Specific Learning Disability (SLD)
- Speech Impairment (SI)
- Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)
- Visual Impairment (VI)
- Developmental Delay (DD)
Child Find
NYOS Charter School has the responsibility of identifying, locating, and evaluating individuals with disabilities who are 0-21 years of age and who fall within the NYOS jurisdiction. The purpose of evaluation is to assess a child’s possible needs for special education and related services.
