STAAR
Beginning in the 2011 – 2012 school year, Texas will implement the State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness, a new test that will take the place of all TAKS tests.

STAAR

In grades 3-8, the TAKS tests will be replaced by the STAAR tests which will be more focused on the rigorous readiness standards in the state curriculum.

The grade levels and subject areas tested will remain the same:
  • Math and Reading Grades 3-8
  • Writing Grades 4 and 7
  • Science Grades 5 and 8
  • Social Studies Grade 8

Students in grades 9-12 will take 12 STAAR End Of Course (EOC) tests that will replace the four TAKS tests that students must pass currently in order to graduate. The first group of high school students to take the EOC tests will be the 9th graders of 2011-2012. There will be several transition years as our high school students who have already begun taking TAKS tests in high school finish out their graduation plans on the TAKS program.

12 EOC tests will be given:
  • English I English II English III
  • Algebra I Geometry Algebra II
  • Biology Chemistry Physics
  • World Geography World History U.S. History
These EOC tests are not tied to a specific grade level; students will take the EOC as they complete the associated course. EOC scores will count for 15% of the final course grade.

NYOS Charter School is committed to keeping its students and families informed of the changes introduced by the new STAAR tests and end-of-course assessments. Adjustments are expected from state officials as the Texas Education Agency continues to clarify questions and concerns regarding STAAR during its initial year of implementation. Updates will be provided as they become available.
