"Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself."

Our Vision

NYOS Charter School—Not Your Ordinary School—is a free, public charter school that was founded in 1998 by a group of parents who wanted more out of education for their children. It is through a commitment to our students, our staff, and our academic excellence that we have been able to grow to serve an estimated 1,800 students in PreK through 12th grade.

NYOS is a community united by a shared commitment to our core values, which align with our vision to educate the whole student for lifelong success. These values serve as the foundation for our collective goals and define the desired outcomes for our students. They establish norms and expectations that guide our interactions and support our inclusive and collaborative environment of students, families, and staff.

Our core values are reflected in the attributes, knowledge, and skills we cultivate in every NYOS graduate, ensuring they are prepared for success in an ever-changing world. These values guide our efforts to create and sustain multiple pathways for engagement and collaboration:
Within our leadership, instructional, and operations teams, fostering a motivating and productive work environment.
Between families and school staff, working together to support student success.
Among all stakeholders, strengthening positive relationships and building a culture of transparency and trust.
With the broader Austin and global community, encouraging civic engagement and shared responsibility.

This commitment to our core values ensures that our vision is realized through meaningful connections, mutual respect, and a dedication to excellence for all members of the NYOS community.

Our Mission

At NYOS Charter School, we educate the whole student. We foster a collegial Pre-K – 12 program that challenges each learner with rigorous academics, innovative strategies, and expectations for civic engagement.

NYOS has created a graduate profile that outlines the key skills students need—thinking, personal growth, and teamwork—from pre-K through 12th grade. This profile ensures students gain the knowledge and abilities to thrive in today’s world.

At NYOS, we focus on meeting every student’s unique learning needs with inclusive, fair, and hands-on learning experiences. Our goal is to inspire students to engage fully in their education and contribute meaningfully to their community, all while setting high expectations for success.

We offer a wide range of programs that support emotional well-being, college and career readiness, physical fitness, the arts, language learning, and personal growth, all while maintaining small class sizes for individualized attention.
